THE SPRINGFIELD PEACE CENTER BELIEVES PEACE EDUCATION CAN BE TAUGHT AND CREATES AN ENVIRONMENT IN THE CAMP WHICH PROMOTES HARMONY, ACCEPTANCE OF DIFFERENCES AND ACQUIRING PROBLEM SOLVING TECHNIQUES. WE HOLD A FREE ONE WEEK PEACE CAMP EACH JUNE FOR THE FIRST 225 CHILDREN WHO REGISTER. OVER 125 VOLUNTEERS ARE USED TO TEACH THE CAMP AS WELL AS MEDIATORS FROM CITY AND COUNTY SCHOOLS WHO ARE TRAINED THE WEEK BEFORE CAMP.


OUR CURRICULUM IS LOOSELY BASED ON THE PEACE WORKS CURRICULUM OUT OF MIAMI, FLORIDA IN THAT OUR LESSONS INCLUDE THE "I-CARE" RULES. THEY ARE 1. WE LISTEN TO EACH OTHER 2. HANDS ARE FOR HELPING, NOT HURTING 3. WE USE I-CARE LANGUAGE 4. WE CARE ABOUT EACH OTHER'S FEELINGS 5. WE ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT WE SAY AND DO. OUR OWN CURRICULUM EMPHASIZES BUILDING SELF-ESTEEM , CELEBRATING DIFFERENCES, TEACHING CONFLICT MANAGEMENT SKILLS, ANTI-BULLYING TIPS, CONTROLLING ANGER AND CARING FOR THE EARTH AND OTHERS.
